Combing the customary colours of Otago and depicting blue skies, tussock-clad hills of gold with two eight-pointed stars which appeared on the Otago Provincial Council's seal. The stars also suggest the sun in the sky and the lakes amongst the hills of Central Otago, the winning entry in a 2004 Otago Flag competition was designed by Gregor Macaulay of Dunedin. The eight pointed stars also appear in the University of Otago's crest and the legendary Speight's Brewery logo.
