The first official flag of New Zealand - Te Kara o Te Whakaminenga o Nga Hapu o Nu Tireni.
On 20th March 1834, 25 Chiefs from the Far North gathered at Waitangi and chose this flag, from 3 designs, which Busby declared the flag of New Zealand. It was replaced by the Union Jack after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1840. For more information please see the Ministry for Culture & Heritage web page.
