In November 2004 a competition was held to select a design for a flag for Otago. This winning entry by Gregor Macaulay of Dunedin combines the customary colours of Otago in a simple yet distinctive design - depicting blue skies, tussock-clad hills of gold with two eight-pointed stars which appeared on the Otago Provincial Council's seal. The stars also suggest the sun in the sky and the lakes amongst the hills of Central Otago.
