Otago's Official Flag
In November 2004 a competition was held to select a design for a flag for Otago. This winning entry by Gregor Macaulay of Dunedin combines the customary colours of Otago in a simple yet distinctive design - depicting blue skies, tussock-clad hills of gold with two eight-pointed stars which appeared on the Otago Provincial Council's seal. The stars also suggest the sun in the sky and the lakes amongst the hills of Central Otago.

United Tribes of NZ Flag
The official flag of New Zealand from 1834 until 1840. James Busby called for a flag to represent NZ and so the Flag of the United Tribes was chosen from 3 flags designs. On 20th March 1834, 25 Chiefs from the Far North gathered at Waitangi and chose this flag which Busby declared the flag of New Zealand. It was replaced by the Union Jack after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1840.
